Practice Breathing With the Pushing
Reconnecting With Your Natural Power
You might not expect it, but one of the most powerful daily practices to prepare for a painless, instinctive birth happens in the most ordinary place: the bathroom.
Yes, really.
Every time you go number two, you’re being offered a sacred opportunity to reconnect with your body’s natural pushing reflex — the same reflex that will guide your baby into the world. Instead of rushing through it or distracting yourself, this is your moment to tune in and train your mind to trust your body.
Why This Works
The physical action of pushing during a bowel movement is almost identical to the pushing stage of birth. When you learn to stay present and relaxed during this daily event, you rewire your brain to associate pushing with ease and safety — instead of fear or strain.
Birth is not about force. It’s about flow. And your body is already showing you how to do it, every single day.
How To Practice
1.Sit comfortably when you need to go to the toilet. Allow your feet to be flat on the floor and your knees slightly elevated if possible (a small stool under your feet helps).
2.As the urge to push comes naturally, breathe in deeply.
3.Then, relax your jaw completely and release a low, open, grounded sound:“Aaaaaaa” (not strained, just naturally vocalized)
4.Allow your body to lead.
Don’t force anything. Simply observe the natural wave of pushing — and allow it.
5.Stay present. Notice how effortlessly your body knows what to do. There’s no panic, no need to control. Just trust.
Why the Jaw Matters
There’s a powerful connection between your jaw and your pelvic floor. When your jaw is tense, your pelvic floor tightens. When your jaw is relaxed, your pelvis opens. Learning to consciously relax your jaw (and even vocalize) during pushing sends a signal to your body: “We are safe. We are open. We allow.”
Daily Mindset Reminder
“I already know how to push. My body is wise. Pushing is natural, easy, and safe.”
By doing this each day, you’re teaching your nervous system that birth is not a scary or mysterious event. It’s something your body is already equipped to do — effortlessly, intuitively, and without pain.
